Chapter 11

“ Sssisssisssisssisssy! Help meemeemee!” Toby’s

screams echoed in Larissa’s heart, and unable to grieve over the sudden loss of her brother. Sitting in the dark with Darcy and struggling with her own feelings would not get him back or help her friend. She had to get her act together.

It was true, she had failed him; however, it was time to grow up, and grow up fast. She knew better than to dwell on the past and waste time at the mercy of evil that controlled the lava lamp. Obviously, the more she suffered, the more the lamp drained her abilities to find a solution.

Now the here and now became her goal. Saving Darcy was the last chance to redeem herself. But would it be enough for Mom and Dad to forgive her for losing Toby? She thought not. Why would they? She hadn’t done a thing to save him.

In the crazy moments before Toby’s disappearance, neither girl wondered who or what had given Toby the ability to use his eyes to light the way. It couldn’t be Father Santos’ spirit. How could he? He had left with Bloodjaw.

Despite that fact, Larissa hoped it was him; at least someone or something in the MagikLava lamp had offered them hope. But, if so, why Toby? Why give him this “guiding light” instead of either of us? Aren’t we older? And better able to manage such power. Was it because he was the youngest and most innocent? Again, Larissa felt something kept drawing her down a path containing no one simple answer. She forced herself to concentrate on moving on, figuring a way to beat the power of the lava lamp and save Darcy.

With a stronger sense of purpose and conviction, she explained her plan to her friend, who was sitting in the dark, still crying for Toby.

“Darcy, please stop crying and listen up,” Larissa started. “I’ve got an idea that’s going to get us out of here before we, too, disappear like Toby.

“But please get ahold of yourself. Like my mother always said, ‘Save the tears for a rainy day when no one can tell if you’re crying or making the best of a bad situation.’”

Darcy stopped. “I don’t get what your mother meant? Besides, it’s dark in here. How can you tell if I’m crying?”

“Darcy, please pay attention. I also stopped crying because I had to figure out what she was trying to tell me. So, in the end, I forgot what I was crying about.”

“Isn’t it strange talking in the dark?”

“Yeah. But please, just listen for a minute.”

“I get it. Okay, you got me to stop crying. Go ahead with your idea….”

“I think this, Father Santos is our way out. Besides, I don’t trust that stupid hummingbird to return us, considering your fish came back dead.”

“I thought you said they died because they didn’t have water inside the lamp?” Darcy reminded her.

“Yeah, that’s true too. But this hummingbird keeps appearing at crazy moments. I’m not sure we can depend on it to get out of here in time.
